News and notes as basketball season is around the corner and the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association beckons next spring.
*Plenty of potential MWBA players will be suiting up at the USPORTS, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association or local leagues in preparation for the 2022 inaugural season.
*There is a large number of former players who have re-connected and have been in touch with all six franchises. The MWBA will announce initial player rosters by Jan. 31, 2022 when eight players are to be introduced per squad.
*All MWBA teams will carry 16 players. Final playoff rosters for June championship will be declared in late May.
*The MWBA and Sports and Entertainment Atlantic have reached a promotional agreement. S|E|A is handling all corporate partnership pursuits. Individual teams are still free to create their own community-based partnerships.
*MWBA is awaiting word on announcing its official basketball supplier. Stay tuned.
*Teams will wear advertising on their jerseys and shorts.
*Home gymnasiums will be announced in early winter for all six franchises. Windsor Edge is anticipating playing out of Kings Edgehill School.
*Apparel and other swag is available for the Fredericton Freeze, Halifax Hornets and Port City Fog of Saint John.
*As of early October, 119 women have officially registered to try and play in the MWBA. That is a remarkable number and shows the interest level is high.
*A championship site for next June’s Final 6 has yet to be determined, but at least two organizations have expressed interest in hosting the three-day event.
*Although not yet official, Moncton’s franchise is leaning toward the Mystics as its nickname.
