MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Moncton Ready to Rumble in MWBA – Welcome to the Mystics

Moncton will be home to one of six teams in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association, set to kick-off its inaugural season next spring.

The Moncton Mystics will begin their season in April and carry a roster of up to 16 women.

The six-team league will use a home-and-away model with divisional play and create a balanced schedule with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia teams. New Brunswick rivals Port City Fog of Saint John and Fredericton Freeze will join the Mystics while Nova Scotia entrants are the Halifax Thunder, Halifax Hornets and Windsor Edge.

“For years I have envisioned a league like the MWBA,” said Shannon Parlee, the Mystics’ owner and director. It’s been many months in the making backed by a group of passionate people on a mission to create a platform where women can continue to play high-level basketball even after university.”

The MWBA is an amateur league for players 19 and over and will feature a professional approach in its on-court product, game presentation and staffing.

Players are expected to be present day USPORTS, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, or professionals playing overseas, who are home for the off-season. Plenty of former players will also return to the competitive fray for the 12-game regular season and championship weekend, which will use a weekend tournament format.

“The Mystics have attracted a committed group to bring the MWBA to Greater Moncton and the surrounding communities,’ said Parlee. ‘We cannot wait to get started and showcase just how much talent there is in our region.”

Moncton will unveil its logo later this month along with team colours. Anyone interested in being a sponsor please contact the team below.
