MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Mystics Name New Coach

The Moncton Mystics have a new head coach.

Jillian Smith will take over coaching duties of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association, replacing Greg Gould, who guided the club in their first season.

Gould has joined the fledgling East Coast Basketball League franchise in Moncton as an assistant coach.

Smith is well-known in the Moncton area as the veteran co-coach of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s Crandall University Chargers.

The Chargers fell in the quarter-finals of the recent ACAA women’s championship in Fredericton.

She has a dozen years of coaching experience at the youth, interscholastic and university levels.

‘We are ecstatic to have Jill at the helm of our team,’ said the Mystics in a release. ‘Jill comes with great coaching experience of all ages and levels and a passion for the game and its growth. Jill will make an impact as we enter season two of the MWBA.’

The Moncton squad has put a call out to interested players in preparation of the season, which begins in early May.

Players must be available to practice two to three times a week and usually two games per week in the six-team circuit which also features Port City Fog of Saint John, Fredericton Freeze, Windsor Edge, Halifax Thunder and reigning MWBA Legacy Cup-champion Halifax Hornets.
