MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Toni’s an MWBA Tiger

The Halifax Hornets needed a win Sunday.

They got it, thanks in large part to a balanced offence, but that outburst was dictated in many ways by point guard Toni Bianchini.

For her work sparking the Hornets’ offence in a key win, Bianchini is the Player of the Week Presented by Royale in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association.

She is the fourth winner of the award this season.

Bianchini had 11 points, created numerous opportunities for her teammates and made passes that resulted in buckets as the Hornets snapped a losing skid and beat the Fredericton Freeze, 84-79.

Other nominees for the award were Allie McCarthy of the Freeze, Karissa Kajorinne of the Halifax Thunder, Abby Miller of the Moncton Mystics, Port City Fog’s Kaylee Kilpatrick and Kate Gallant of the Windsor Edge.

League action picks up again Thursday on two fronts.

Thunder hosts Windsor in an attempt cap a perfect 10-0 regular season, a 7 p.m. game at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax.

A neutral site game has a big one as Port City welcomes Fredericton to Sussex Regional High School for a 7 p.m., game and first place on the line for top New Brunswick team.

The top provincial teams all earn first-round playoff byes.
