Halifax built an early lead, had some anxious moments in the second half, but held Fredericton at bay in its comeback bid, the Hornets downing the Freeze 81-75 to win the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s bronze medal Sunday.
The game was played at TD Station in Saint John.
In a game neither team was interested in playing when the three-day event unfolded, it turned into a battle of wills, Halifax grabbing that early lead and Fredericton battling back to give plenty of intrigue.
The Hornets did put it away late to earn the medals, Fredericton showing plenty of resistance.
Courtney Donaldson powered Halifax with 17 points. Jasmine Parent posted 16 and Sarah Gordon had 13. Sophia Widmeyer and Eva Widmeyer both had eight points.
Kylee Speedy ripped 24 to lead all scorers for Fredericton. Robbi Daley had 13, Katie Daley 11 and Katie Butts had 10.
Halifax held a 47-38 halftime lead.
