Thunder Wins MWBA Crown

The Halifax Thunder and Port City Fog engaged in a Legacy Cup championship to remember.

What a battle.

In the end, the regular season champion Thunder capped a perfect season in style, downing the Fog, 102-93 in front of a Maritime Women’s Basketball Association attendance record 1,079 at TD Station in Saint John on Sunday.

It was an outstanding ending to an outstanding three days of Legacy Cup action in the Port City.

Halifax fell behind early, before regrouping, but Port City came back, playing its third game in three days, tying the contest at 48-48 at halftime.

Thunder roared out of the second half gates, going on a 12-0 run, but the Fog would come back to own a 65-64 lead with 3:42 to play in the third.

Halifax then opened another lead only to have the Fog get back into it when Reese Baxendale hit back-to-back treys late in the third.

The see-saw battle continued down to the wire with Halifax clinging to a 95-93 lead with 86 seconds to play.

That’s when the game was decided.

Tournament MVP Karissa Kajorinne smoked a three-pointer and added another two with 56 seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Kajorinne finished with 25 points. Tiffany Reynolds, Karla Yepez and Katie Upham all had 14 points. Vanessa Pickard had 13 for Halifax.

Regular season MVP Kaylee Kilpatrick had 27 points for Port City. Mackenzee Ryan popped 20, Courtney Thompson and Reese Baxendale both popped 14 and Hailey MacLeod scored 11.
