Thunder Squeezes Past 56ers

An absolute barnburner to kick off Season III of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association.

Back-and-forth and late drama, but when all was said and done the visiting Halifax Thunder pulled out a dramatic 72-70 win over the Lake City 56ers in the lid-lifter of the seven-team league.

The game attracted a full house at Cole Harbour High School.

The 56ers carried a slim 46-44 halftime lead and held a 57-54 edge into the pivotal fourth quarter before the reigning Legacy Cup champion Thunder outscored its hosts, 18-13 for the win.

Halifax has never lost a regular season game since the league opened, the Thunder now 21-0 all-time with one title on its mantle.

Justine Colley-Leger dropped 22 points to lead all scorers and Halifax. Katie Upham counted 10.

Courtney Donaldson’s 17 powered Lake City. Elizabeth Iseyemi scored 13.

Lake City is back in action Sunday, visiting Halifax Hornets at 3 p.m.

That game is set for Mount St. Vincent University.
