MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Fourth Frame Sparks Freeze

Fredericton Freeze appeared out of contention in this game.

The Freeze had blown two leads of seven points in the first half and watched Miramichi Her-Icanes take control of the game including entering the fourth quarter.

That’s when things changed for the hometown Freeze.

Fredericton outscored Miramichi 20-9 in the pivotal fourth quarter and would go on to post a 70-64 Maritime Women’s Basketball Association win Sunday.

The win assured a home playoff game Tuesday night against Moncton Mystics. Miramichi will hit the road for a post-season outing Tuesday in Saint John, visiting Port City Fog.

Final game times for both will be verified Monday.

Allie McCarthy powered Fredericton with 24 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter. Bailey Russel dropped 16 and Eva Tumwine had a dozen.

Lauren Rainford hammered home 25 to lead all scorers for the ‘Canes. Devon Lawlor scored 10 and Bailey Black added nine.

Fredericton finished the regular season 6-4, tied for second overall, but gave up points differential with Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour for third spot. Miramichi finished 4-6.

Port City’s mark was 5-5 and Moncton 3-7.
