MWBAers Set For Seasons

Some seasons have started, some are ready to unfold this week.

That means there’s plenty of players from last year’s Maritime Women’s Basketball Association rosters who are suiting up wearing their university colours for 2024-25.

We’ll keep tabs on the many players who play post-secondary and played during the MWBA’s 2024 season.

We’ll start at the USPORTS level and that includes seven members of the Fredericton Freeze.

Maheeva Ngassam, Leah Travers, Ann Bastien and Katie Butts are all with the University of New Brunswick Reds. Kylee Speedy is a Red and Freeze teammate, but is sidelined this season with an injury.

Allie McCarthy and Bailey Russell of the Freeze are teammates with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees.

Lillian Fuller of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour’s Lake City 56ers is with UNB. McKinley Bezanson of Saint John’s Port City Fog is also with the Reds. Lake City’s Emma Cameron is with Acadia University Axewomen in Wolfville, NS.

Port City’s Kristen Taylor plays with Cape Breton University Capers.

Eva Widmeyer of the Halifax Hornets and Sydney Guker-Wickie of the Halifax Thunder are teammates with Dalhousie University Tigers in Halifax. Hornets’ Aliyah Fraser is with Saint Mary’s University Huskies of Halifax.

A crew of University of Prince Edward Island Panthers played in the MWBA last season including league MVP Lauren Rainford of the Miramichi Hericanes. Rainford’s UPEI teammates with the ‘Canes included Abby Miller and Devon Lawlor. Grace Lancaster of the Thunder plays with UPEI.

Emily MacNeil of the Thunder is with Bishop’s University Gaiters in Lennoxville, QU., and two members of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour’s Lake City 56ers are teammates with St. Francis Xavier University X-Women including Abby Mercer and Abby Cameron.

Sami Russell of the Thunder is with Acadia.

Allie Dunnett of the Fog is with Ontario Technical University Ridgebacks.

Vanessa Vaughan of the Hornets is with the University of Southern Maine Huskies, a Division III National Collegiate Athletic Association school which competes in the Little East Conference.

At the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association level, Amanda Pearcey of the Hornets is with Mount St. Vincent University Mystics of Halifax, teammates there with Celine Streckel and Samia Amadou of the Moncton Mystics.

Miramichi’s Alexa Rancourt is with Charlottetown’s Holland College Hurricanes, joining Lauren Armstrong of the 56ers.

Port City’s Amelia Mitchell, Grace Tilley and Danielle Alexander are all teammates with Sackville’s Mount Allison University Mounties. Avery Alward of the Fog and Miramichi’s Bailey Henderson and Jenny Cripps are with University of New Brunswick at Saint John Seawolves.
