Some familiar Maritime Women’s Basketball Association names are amongst the leaders – or sit atop the leaderboard – two weeks into the Atlantic University Sport season.
Katie Butts of the University of New Brunswick Reds is off to a remarkable AUS start through four games with the 2-2 squad.
Butts, who has spent two seasons in the MWBA with the Fredericton Freeze, is leading the AUS in scoring 23.5 points per game. She has scored 94 total points including a whopping 36 in a 95-77 win over visiting Dalhousie University Tigers of Halifax on Nov. 9.
Lauren Rainford of the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers sits second with 22.5 points per game. Rainford is the reigning MWBA MVP with the Miramichi Hericanes.
Grace Lancaster of UPEI sits eighth with 14.5 points a game. Lancaster played last season with MWBA champion Halifax Thunder. She is the AUS leader in three-point shooting success, knocking down 11 in 26 bids.
Butts sits second in rebounds with 14.3 per outing. Her UNB and Freeze teammate Maheva Ngassam is fifth with 8.8.
Ann Bastien of the Reds has 17 assists and sits top five in that category. Bastien played last season for Fredericton.
Katelyn Power of the Saint Mary’s University Huskies is in a three-way tie for top spot in blocks with six. Butts is tied for fourth with four rejections.
Rainford is 16-for-23 to lead shooters from the free throw line. Ngassam is third at 15-26 and Butts fourth at 15-for-17.
