We have profiled a number of Maritime Women’s Basketball Association players who are playing in at the Atlantic University Sport and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association levels.
Now that are fully engaged in preparing for the 2024-25 stretch run, there are a number of players from the MWBA who are playing in different conferences in Canada and the United States.
The University of Ottawa Gee Gees are fresh of an exhibition win on Jan. 4, the Ontario Athletics University school taking down Quebec-based Bishop’s University Gaiters of Lennoxville, 69-42, in the nation’s capital.
Allie McCarthy and Bailey Russell of the MWBA’s Fredericton Freeze are teammates with Ottawa.
McCarthy started and logged 24 minutes in the win, scoring 23 points and adding seven rebounds, four of them on the offensive side of the ball. Russell had 19 minutes and knocked three triples, finishing with nine points and two boards.
During regular season OAU play, McCarthy has started all 12 Gee Gees’ games and averages 33.3 minutes per game. She brings home 12.5 points and outing. Russell has started four times and averages 7.2 points per outing and 4.2 rebounds.
Allie Dunnett of the MWBA’s Port City Fog in Saint John is also in the OUA, playing with Ontario Technical University Ridgebacks in Oshawa. She is averaging 4.0 points per game and 2.0 rebounds for the RBacks.
Emily MacNeil is with Bishop’s, but did not play in the game against Ottawa. She has appeared in five games for the Gaiters, averaging 13.4 minutes. She has 19 points in the five games.
Vanessa Vaughan of the MWBA’s Halifax Hornets is with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Portland. She was a member of the 2022-23 Little East all rookie team. This season, Vaughan has appeared in 11 games and averages 23.5 minutes per game, scoring 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds.
