‘Canes, Thunder, Hornets Win

Three teams celebrated victory Saturday night in a busy Maritime Women’s Basketball Association day of action.

Miramichi Her-icanes, Halifax Thunder and Halifax Hornets all emerged victorious on New Brunswick soil.

The tightest game of the day was played in Fredericton with the Her-icanes pulling out a tough  76-74 victory over the hometown Freeze.

Miramichi swept the three-game unbalanced schedule this season and moved to 6-1. Fredericton fell to 4-4.

Lauren Rainford went off for 25 points as the Her-icanes came back from a 45-40 halftime deficit.

Bailey Russell sparked Fredericton with 19 points. The talented Russell had a three-pointer at the horn, but got caught iron for the winning attempt.

At St. George, NB, in a neutral site game, the Halifax Thunder dropped Saint John’s Port City Fog, 112-57.

Six Thunder players hit double figures, Alaina McMillan leading the way with a game-high 23 points. Sandy Saunders had 14, Bianca Helmig and Hayley Lalor scored 13 each and Sami Russell popped 11. Alexis Evans and Kiera Duffie had 10 each.

McKinley Bezanson’s 13 topped Port City leaders. Erin Ingalls had 12 and Danielle Alexander 10.

Meawhile, the Halifax Hornets downed host Moncton Mystics, 67-57 behind 19 points from Melina Collins and Amanda Pearcey scored 10.

Celine Sterckel paced Moncton with 14 points. Lindy Alcorn, Eavan McLaughlin and Olivia Mowatt all scored nine.
