To be honest, there were some serious questions surrounding the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association when it opened for play back in 2022.
From a much-anticipated and successful launch at Garrison Brewery in Halifax in the winter of 2022 to expansion to players signing professional contracts to championships won and lost, the MWBA is now bracing for its fifth-year anniversary.
With that in mind, the Fredericton Freeze launched a five-year anniversary logo to be used on warmups and digital marketing for the 2026 season.
‘Milestones are always a good time to promote your product and it’s a tremendous accomplishment to celebrate five years in business, whether it’s sports, business or relationships,’ said Freeze manager of basketball operations, Bram Russell. ‘We wanted something to showcase our sustainability as an organization and within the community. We’re proud and the league is proud to prepare for this anniversary season coming up.’
New Brunswick-based graphic artist Michael Carter of MC Design, who created the Freeze logo and several other MWBA team logos, put together the fifth-year anniversary logo of the frozen Roman Numeral 5.
‘The MWBA and Freeze have been great partners to work with, so it was great to be asked to create a commemorative logo for Fredericton,’ said Carter. ‘We wanted something simple, but powerful with the Freeze image at the forefront.’
The Freeze will open the 2026 season the first weekend of May.
The seven-team MWBA features Fredericton, reigning Legacy Cup champion Miramichi Her-Icanes, Port City Fog of Saint John, Moncton Mystics, reigning regular season champion Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston, Halifax Thunder and Halifax Hornets.
Expansion is on the docket with a Friday, Oct. 17 deadline for interest.
The league’s AGM is set for Monday, Oct. 20.
