Have Your Nickname Say

The Colchester County…?

The newest entrant into the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association will earn its new nickname through public consultation and voting in the beautiful Colchester County region of Nova Scotia.

The MWBA’s eighth team was granted its franchise last month, a unanimous vote that now will see the league with four teams in the Bluenose Province and four in New Brunswick.

Fans of the new squad will have their say into the team’s eventual nickname.

Colchester County has close to 52,000 citizens with the Town of Truro and Town of Stewiake forming the largest population bases.

Robbie McGee and Cindy MacNeil of Halifax, who run the successful 902 Hoops leagues in the provincial capital, are behind the expansion project.

The duo has asked the people of Colchester County to name the team.

Since inception, McGee said there has not been a shortage of nickname recommendations and now that the deadline for that part of the project is over, the final announcement awaits.

There were numerous offerings, but the team has whittled it down to four choices to fall under the Colchester County banner including Cavaliers, Comets, Tides, Vipers, Rebels, Lantzers, Celtic Fire, Chargers, Queens, Coyotes, Strikers, Falcons, Rams, Tidal Queens and Cougars can check out the latest on Instagram @902Hoop or on Facebook @902hoopsleague

‘It’s not too late for people to have their say on which of the names that have been submitted are ones they like,’ said McGee. ‘This has been a lot of fun and it’s been great to see the interest behind the name the team contest. We are working on arranging meetings in Colchester County overt the next little bit to get our locations and league schedule dates confirmed.’
