Four players from the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association find themselves in the top 13 of the nation’s leading scorers including two members of the Fredericton Freeze sitting in the top five of USPORTS offensive categories.
Allie McCarthy of the Freeze is the nation’s leading scorer entering play this week.
The University of Ottawa Gee Gees has amassed 152 points through seven games for the reigning Ontario University Athletic champions.
McCarthy averages 21.7 points per outing.
Her Ottawa and Freeze teammate Bailey Russell is fifth in the country with 137 points. That’s a per game average of 19.6.
Sami Russell of the MWBA’s Halifax Thunder and Acadia University Axewomen is averaging 18 points per game in the Atlantic University Sport conference. That has her tied for 10th in the nation with Olivia Weekes of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
Grace Lancaster, who helped lead Miramichi Her-Icanes to last season’s MWBA PROLINE Legacy Cup title, is 13th in USPORTS with 17.1 points per outing in seven games.
‘It’s fantastic to see so many of our talented women excelling with their university teams or playing key roles at the USPORTS level,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen Lloyd of Dartmouth, NS. ‘So many women are helping improve their games playing in the MWBA and carrying that into university action. It’s a win-win situation for the athletes, their MWBA teams and their university teams. It’s a joy to watch them play at both levels.’
McCarthy sits eighth all-time in MWBA scoring with 321 career points with the Freeze. Russell has amassed 287 points for Fredericton and is 12th all-time. Lancaster’s 254 career points have her 17th on the MWBA list and Russell’s 197 secures 25th all-time.
The MWBA will celebrate its fifth season, beginning May 2, 2026.
