Tidal Queens Announce Signing

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s newest team isn’t fooling around.

Expansion Truro Tidal Queens announced they have the first player in team history, bringing Kendra MacKinnon on board for the league’s fifth anniversary season, beginning in early May.

MacKinnon is a native of Pictou, NS, and spent three productive seasons with the Saint Mary’s University Huskies at the Atlantic University Sport level.

She appeared in 60 games for the Huskies, amassing 430 career points. MacKinnon was 110-for-353 over her career from beyond the arc.

MacKinnon has MWBA experience, appearing in six games for the Halifax Hornets during the 2024 season. She averaged just under 16 minutes a game and provided 6.7 points per outing for the Hornets.

Truro head coach Lonnie States was certainly pleased with MacKinnon’s signing.

‘Having Kendra on board with the Tidal Queens is very exciting.’ said Truro head coach, Lonnie States. ‘Her basketball journey speaks volumes from Saint Mary’s to her time in the MWBA with the Halifax Hornets. We’re very happy Kendra has chosen to come to our Colchester County community. We know her basketball IQ and impact will be an asset on the court, in the lockerroom and the community. Kendra is an outstanding young woman. We’re incredibly happy to have her signed.’

All MWBA players are considered free agents as of Jan. 1, but Truro jumped out of the gates with the MacKinnon announcement as the Tidal Queens prepare for their first year in the Nova Scotia Division with Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston, Hornets and Halifax Thunder.

The four New Brunswick teams are reigning champion Miramichi Her-Icanes, Fredericton Freeze, Moncton Mystics and Port City Fog of Saint John.

The eight tams will open play the first week of May.

The PROLINE Legacy Cup will be hosted in Nova Scotia as the league continues to alternate between the Bluenose Province and New Brunwick sites.

Two championships have been decided in Halifax and one each in Saint John and Fredericton.
