Former MWBAer Tackles New Role

The Halifax Hornets are rebuilding their coaching staff.
It starts with an assistant coaching position, filled by former university and Maritime Women’s Basketball Association stalwart, Sophia Widmeyer.
Widmeyer was named to the assistant position this by the Hornets.
Halifax has yet to name its head coach for the 2026 season.
Widmeyer was an Atlantic University Sport second team all-star and part of a league championship in 2023 with the Saint Mary’s University Huskies of Halifax. She also played at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level with Rhode Island’s Providence College Friars and played professionally in Ireland before a knee injury ended that remarkable experience.
It will be Widmeyer’s fourth year with the Hornets.
She helped the squad to an MWBA bronze medal in 2023 during the Legacy Cup championship at TD Station in Saint John.
‘Sophia deeply misses being on the court, but she has taken her love and knowledge for the game, along with her energetic and authentic coaching style and now gives back to women and girls throughout Halifax Regional Municipality,’ said the Hornets in a release. ‘Sophia’s passion for the game, plus the genuine care and concern she has for her athletes are just a few of the things that make her so great.’
She averaged 9.8 points per game for the Hornets during her lone MWBA season.
Widmeyer is keeping busy in the game, working with Saint Mary’s, Halifax Grammar girls’ varsity team and a local under-14 girls’ team.
The Hornets are expected to announce their head coach later in the winter.
