Championship Sunday Looms

One game for a championship.

After a summer of training, pre-season games, the rigours of a regular season, one game will deliver a title to one team as the Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball conference reaches fruition Sunday in Halifax.

Regular season champion University of New Brunswick Reds of Fredericton face Charlottetown’s University of Prince Edward Island Panthers in pursuit of a title and a shot at attending USPORTS Bell Final 8 championship next month.

Game time is 1 p.m., at Scotiabank Place.

There is plenty of Maritime Women’s Basketball Association intrigue in the final as well.

UNB punched its ticket to the final with a convincing 72-52 win over St. Francis Xavier University X-Women of Antigonish, NS.

The Reds earned a 40-26 halftime lead and never looked back.

Ann Bastien (former Fredericton Freeze) earned 17 points while Maheeva Ngassam scored eight points and was a monster on the boards, grabbing a dozen rebounds. Zoe Olscamp (Lake City 56ers) scored 10, Katie Butts (former Freeze) had seven and Kylee Speedy (former Freeze) had six for UNB. Leah Travers (former Freeze) counted four points.

Abby Mercer (Lake City) had eight points for St. FX. Mali Straker (Port City Fog of Saint John) had six.

Meanwhile, the third place Panthers upset second-seed Acadia University Axewomen of Wolfville, NS, 69-63 in the other semifinal.

Grace Lancaster (Miramichi Her-Icanes) continued her big game reputation, drilling 28 points for UPEI. Sydney Lawlor (Miramichi) had three points and Devon Lawlor (Miramichi) scored two and had five boards.

The winner of Sunday’s game advances to the national title tournament at Universite de Laval in early March.
