STU Dominates Award Season

The St. Thomas University Tommies of Fredericton finished 17-1 atop the standings in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association regular season play.

That memorable campaign also resulted in plenty of hardware during ACAA celebrations Thursday night in Halifax.

The ACAA Final 6 begins Friday, but athletes had a chance to dress up and join other players from across the league to celebrate regular season play.

The Tommies’ Charlee Connors earned ACAA MVP honours and her father, Fred, was named coach of the year.

Connors also earned first team all-star laurels, joining Danielle Alexander of the Mount Allison University Mounties, Ainsley Green of University of New Brunswick at Saint John Seawolves, Victoria Strickland of ACAA tournament host Mount St. Vincent University Mystics and Mykeva Wilson-Brown of Charlottetown’s Holland College Hurricanes.

The second team consists of Katie Vidito, Claudia Steeves and Paige LeBlanc of St. Thomas, joining Holland College’s Karissa George and Grace Tilley of Mount Allison.

Alexander, Tilley an Green are all teammates in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association with Port City Fog of Saint John.

Now that the fun stuff is over, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty of playing.

It all kicks off at 1 p.m. when No. 3 seed Mount Allison faces Moncton’s Crandall University Chargers. No. 4 seed Holland College faces No. 5 UNBSJ at 3 p.m.

As conference regular season champion, St. Thomas will face the lowest remaining quarter-final survivor on Saturday at 1 p.m. Hometown Mount St. Vincent gets the highest survivor at 3 p.m.

The title game is set for Sunday.
