Bram Russell didn’t hesitate reaching out to a player he knows very well.
In an effort to assemble his Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s Fredericton Freeze roster, Russell put in a call to Sophie Doiron.
Familiarity certainly helped.
And Doiron will now play for the Freeze in the 2026 season.
The highly-recruited five-foot-10 point guard was a prized signing for the reigning Atlantic University Sport champion University of New Brunswick Reds. Doiron will join the Reds and study kinesiology at UNB.
Russell, the new head coach and general manager of the Freeze, coached Doiron on a number of occasions at the Basketball New Brunswick level. She was BNB’s captain at the 2025 Canada Summer Games and participated in two national championships.
‘I’ve had the opportunity to watch Sophie grow as a player and more importantly as a mature young woman who loves the game and always sets her personal goal bar high,’ Russell said. ‘She is going to be a player to watch for UNB and it’s going to be a great experience for her to jump into the MWBA and play against experienced players.’
Doiron helped paced Dieppe’s Mathieu Martin High Vedettes to a Scholastic Sport New Brunswick Final 12 championship in February. She had 11 points and 16 rebounds in the championship outing against Riverview High Royals.
Doiron was also named an SSNB all-star.
