Tidal Queen Earns MWBA Weekly Award

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association is one tough league.

A tough league to secure wins, a tough league to find room and space with rosters teaming with talent.

For the expansion Truro Tidal Queens, it has not been an easy season, as the squad seeks its first win against seven losses, finding its way in the eight-team league under head coach Lonnie States.

States and his patient method of coaching has been a guiding light for the Tidal Queens and a number of bright spots are beginning to emerge for the Truro entrant.

That includes Nykeva Wilson-Brown, named the MWBA’s Wonder Auto&Tire Player of the Week.

Wilson-Brown had an outstanding Week IV for Truro in a pair of setbacks to earn the honour.

She had a game-high and franchise record 27-point outburst in a 75-66 setback to the Miramichi HerIcanes. Wilson-Brown also meshed 13 in a 92-70 loss to Moncton Mystics as Truro made its first-ever foray into New Brunswick.

Wilson-Brown is averaging over 20 minutes a game for States’ squad and brings 15 points per game to the table. She is also pulling down 7.8 rebounds an outing.

Other players considered for the weekly award were Moncton’s Lindsay Black, Lily Francois of the Halifax Hornets, Lillian Fuller of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston’s Lake City 56ers, Maddy White of Halifax Thunder, Miramichi’s Kassidy Hamilton, Ann Bastien of Fredericton Freeze and Neve Pearson of Saint John’s Port City Fog.

Week V kicks off Saturday with two games, beginning in Fredericton on Saturday when the Freeze (2-3) meet the Hornets (5-1) at Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., Port City welcomes Lake City at St. Malachy’s Memorial High School in the heart of Saint John.

A rarity unfolds Sunday with all eight teams in action.

Fredericton and the 56ers tangle at 12:30 p.m., at the LB Gym while at 1 p.m., Port City and the Hornets clash at St. Malachy’s and Truro hosts Thunder at Dal Agricultural College. A 3 p.m., game has Moncton welcoming Miramichi at Crandall University.
