What’s in a name?
Plenty.
Let’s see, there was the Fredericton Bandits, Fredericton ThunderCats, Fredericton Fire, Fredericton Polar Bears and probably a few more that ended up in the circular file.
Naming a team is never easy, but the Fredericton Freeze became reality in 2021 and entered the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association as part of the Original Six, beginning play in 2022.
Now, entering its sixth year, the Freeze and the MWBA has both found a niche in New Brunswick’s Capital City.
The Freeze was founded by Brad Janes, before he turned the organizational keys over to Bram and Bridget Russell this past season. Janes has now joined the MWBA as its executive director.
Fredericton has captured four New Brunswick Division regular season championships, usurped this season for the first time by the Moncton Mystics.
The Freeze has been to one PROLINE Legacy Cup final, losing this past June to Halifax Thunder in a thrilling championship game.
Fredericton has hosted the past two league championships to solid crowds at the Richard J. Currie Center.
City fans have followed the Freeze, part of a busy sporting landscape.
