Truro Fits MWBA Like a Glove

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association was purring along with six teams.

Six teams through the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

It was Fredericton Freeze, Halifax Hornets, Halifax Thunder, Moncton Mystics, Saint John’s Port City Fog and Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston.

The letterhead became busier in 2024 when the Miramichi HerIcanes launched.

And, then, last season, the MWBA expanded to eight teams when the Truro Tidal Queens were announced.

The Tidal Queens allowed the league to achieve balance with four teams in Nova Scotia and a New Brunswick quarter.

Under the direction of Robbie Magee and Cindy MacNeil, the Tidal Queens hit the ground running late last fall and were the first team to begin announcing roster selections in early January, also naming Lonnie States as the organization’s first-ever head coach.

Truro was busy in its new community promoting its brand and the MWBA.

Yes, the Tidal Queens struggled as an expansion team, but learned valuable lessons along the way with just competitive the MWBA is and will continue to be.

The MWBA is proud to be in Truro, a perfect location for two provinces.

What’s in store for 2027 with the Tidal Queens?

News will come soon, but the league knows this – Truro, We. Are. Here.
