They came along at exactly the right time.
And found almost immediate success.
The City of Miramichi loves basketball and the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association has been welcomed with open arms.
It was four years ago the Fredericton Freeze and Port City Fog of Saint John played a pre-season game at Miramichi Valley High School. The game was met with enthusiasm and opened the door for the MWBA to land its first expansion team after going two seasons with six teams.
The Miramichi HerIcanes were born and have been a thriving success for three seasons.
Immediately competitive, the ‘Canes would actually earn a PROLINE Legacy Cup championship in only its second year of operation, earning the 2025 crown in Fredericton with a veteran-laden team.
Jim Watters, Brittany Sullivan and Whitney Foran are key members of the community-minded Miramichi off court team which has developed a loyal following and has a tremendous crew of game day volunteers.
Miramichi has been a tremendous shot in the arm for the MWBA, a place where opposing players love to come and play and a place where the hometown HerIcanes are treated like gold by organizers.
A win-win situation, indeed.
We.Are.Here.
