The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association will host its annual general meeting in late October.
To prepare for that session, the league met Sept. 22 to ensure all was in order moving forward when it comes to the MWBA’s sixth season of operation in the spring of 2027.
All eight teams are returning to the fold.
The Good Robot Nova Scotia Division features reigning champion Halifax Thunder, Halifax Hornets, Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston and Truro Tidal Queens. The Good Robot Nova Scotia Division has Fredericton Freeze, Moncton Mystics, Port City Fog of Saint John and Miramichi HerIcanes.
‘It was a great opportunity to get together and discuss several key items, but team stability was critical for us to know in the early fall,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen McKenzie of Dartmouth. ‘All teams are ready to roll. We wanted to be proactive this off-season and are completing tasks much earlier than previously. It allows for plenty of planning and the results have been solid.’
Teams have had a preliminary schedule since July and are in the process of securing facilities and tinkering with dates.
One major change in the schedule could see the league open earlier than ever.
The target date is Sunday, April 25, for regional rivalry games.
That would allow the league an opportunity to hold its PRO·LINE Legacy Cup championship earlier, finishing June 12-13, the earliest the MWBA would crown a winner.
‘The teams have been very proactive in looking at different approaches to the schedule,’ said McKenzie. ‘More mid-week games between regional rivalries, maybe a doubleheader in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick when out of province teams come in. Perhaps bringing in a youth game between two MWBA games. Our crew has been open about making some schedule changes and it’s been great to listen to some potential proposals.’
The league will continue its 10-game regular season.
Other housekeeping duties included bylaw and constitution updates, marketing and promotions and new FIBA rules to be introduced.
Speaking of marketing and promotions, the league has signed on new partners including Good Robot Brewing and has expanded coverage with Fredericton-base TRL Solutions.
Fans can anticipate a new website for 2027 as well.
Social media numbers have exploded this off-season with some aggressive marketing campaigns including We.Are.Here. and several other prominent postings.
