MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Familiar Names Join Thunder

The Maritime Women’s Basketball League’s Halifax Thunder is preparing for its fourth season next spring.

The successful Halifax franchise, which is two-time reigning Pro*Line Stadium Series Legacy Cup champion, was built as an extension to a very popular girls’ youth program in the Nova Scotia capital that has been running for over two decades under the leadership of Brandon Rafuse.

Thunder Selects youth programs had coaching staffs announced for the 2025 season with three names certainly familiar with the MWBA Thunder program.

Halifax head coach Parker Regan will guide the under-17 Elite program next year.

Present-day Thunder assistant general manager Karen Bolivar will lead Thunder’s under-15 program and Katie Upham will coach its under-16 program.

Regan has been head coach of Thunder’s MWBA team since the league launched in 2022.

He is also an assistant coach with Atlantic University Sport’s Dalhousie University Tigers women’s team.

Bolivar enters her second full season in 2025 as Rafuse’s assistant general manager.

Upham has played 13 games with the Thunder over two seasons.
