56ers Advance to Final

One heck of a game.

Not surprising considering the Lake City 56ers and Fredericton Freeze locked horns again in another PRO•LINE Legacy Cup semifinal showdown in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association.

In the end, the regular season champion 56ers used a dominant 23-9 third quarter outburst and would post a 75-69 win over the Freeze, advancing to Sunday’s final.

The 56ers will face the winner of Miramichi Her-icanes and Halifax Thunder who play in in the second semifinal.

The teams were tied 39-39 at halftime and Fredericton actually grabbed a short-lived lead before Lake City went on a massive run, withholding a late Freeze comeback bid.

Regular season MVP MacKenzie Smith sparked Lake City with a game-high 22 points. Courtney Donaldson, a first team all-star with Smith, popped 18. Lauren Armstrong scored 11 and Abby Mercer had nine.

Allie McCarthy, a second team all-star, paced Fredericton with 18 points. Bailey Russell had 16, Eva Tumwine 14 and Courtney Thompson offered 11. Russell was a first team all-star and Tumwine joined McCarthy on the second team.

Fredericton will play in the consolation game against the loser of the Miramichi and Halifax at 12:30 p.m.

All games are at the Richard J. Currie Center on the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
