Thunder Knocks Back Freeze

The Halifax Thunder finished its season on a winning note, capturing the consolation title at the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup Maritime Women’s Basketball Association championship weekend.

Thunder earned a come-from-behind 71-63 win over Fredericton Freeze in the third place game at the Richard J. Currie Center Sunday.

Halifax outscored Fredericton 20-13 in a key fourth quarter run, taking advantage of a number of unforced Freeze turnovers.

Sami Russell erupted for 20 points to lift Halifax, which finished the regular season at 7-3, but fell in Saturday’s semifinal to Miramichi Her-Icanes.

Sophie Atkinson and Alaina McMillan dropped 10 apiece for Thunder. Alexis Evans added nine and Bianca Helmig eight.

Bailey Russell paced all scorers for Fredericton with 23 points. Allie McCarthy had 15. Katie Daley added eight.

The teams were tied 39-39 at halftime.
