Hornet Garners Player of Week Laurels

It’s not always about points, rebounds, assists, steals and more.

Many times, of course, it helps to be a leader in those departments, but after a pair of wins for the Halifax Hornets and a plus 52 over those two outings, Clara Gascoigne is your Wonder Auto&Tire Player of the Week.

Halifax went 2-0 during Week III and climbed into a three-way tie for first place in the eight-team.

Gascoigne had her fingerprints all over both wins.

During a 105-42 win over Miramichi HerIcanes, Gascoigne offered 24 points, dished five assists and was a plus 30.

She had 10 points in just over 25 minutes, collecting four assists, three rebounds and a plus 22-mark in a 96-64 triumph over the Truro Tidal Queens.

Other players nominated for the weekly honour were Julia Black of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston’s Lake City 56ers, Miramichi’s Ava Sprague, Maddie Eustace of the Moncton Mystics, Bailey Russell of Fredericton Freeze, Neve Pearson of Saint John’s Port City Fog and Truro’s Courtney Cain-Nordin.

Eustace, it should be noted, set a franchise record for points in a single game with 35 in a win over Fredericton.

Halifax Thunder was idle last week.

The MWBA kicks off its fourth week of action Thursday in the New Brunswick capital when Port City comes to play the Freeze at 7:30 p.m.

That game is set for the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium.
