Freeze Guard Nabs MWBA Award

Kylee Speedy shot the lights out last week.

That, along with helping the Freeze clinch top New Brunswick spot with a two-game win streak, has earned the Fredericton guard the fifth and final Maritime Women’s Basketball Association Player of the Week Presented by Royale honour.

Speedy set a Fredericton single game points record, meshing 29 including seven three-pointers in a nail-biting, 87-86 win over Moncton Mystics. She also had her finger-prints over the Freeze’s clinching win over Port City Fog of Saint John.

She finished fourth in league scoring with a 16.6 points per game average.

Others nominated for the award were Tiffany Reynolds of the undefeated Halifax Thunder, Courtney Donaldson of the Halifax Hornets, Moncton’s Lia St. Pierre, Courtney Thompson of the Fog and Nalini Maharaj of the Windsor Edge.

All six players and their teammates will be in action this weekend as the MWBA’s Legacy Cup unfolds at Saint John’s TD Station.

Opening day is Friday with quarter-final action featuring the Mystics and Hornets at 6 p.m. and hometown Port City and Windsor at 8 p.m.

Consolation game is Saturday at 11 a.m., leading into Saturday semifinals at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Fredericton and Thunder have byes into those semifinals.

Thunder gets the lowest remaining quarter-final seed and Fredericton gets highest seed.

On Sunday, the bronze game goes at 1 p.m. and championship is at 3 p.m.
