All seven Maritime Women’s Basketball Associations are preparing for the open signing windows of players.
Teams, if they choose, can begin signing players for the 2024 season which is set to begin in early May.
Reigning champion Halifax Thunder join Halifax Hornets, Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth Region, Port City Fog of Saint John, Fredericton Freeze, Moncton Mystics and expansion Miramichi Her-icanes in the circuit.
All players who played in the MWBA last season are considered free agents and can sign with any team, beginning Feb. 5.
‘We looked at a number of scenarios in regards to player signings and eligibility listings and we agreed on allowing all players to be considered free agents from last year,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen McKenzie of Dartmouth. ‘Some teams may choose to announce a number of players when the signing window opens and some may hold off to decide their entire rosters through training camp processes.’
MWBA teams are eligible to sign 14 players and can dress that many for each game if desired.
A player must participate in at least six games to be eligible for the post-season.
The MWBA will play a 10-game regular season schedule, beginning May 2.
All rosters must be complete with seven days of each team’s season opener.
