It was called an intriguing matchup in the Medavie Game of the Week in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association Thursday night.
Well, that lived up to the pre-game hype.
Halifax Hornets, seeking their first win of the season, appeared destined to do exactly that, leading by 14 points at one juncture of the first half before the host Lake City 56ers went to work.
The 56ers came out firing in the second, took their first lead in the fourth quarter and used two clutch free throws from Courtney Donaldson with 28 seconds to secure an eventual 65-62 win.
Donaldson stepped to the line with the game knotted at 62-62.
She would finish with 15 points. Andrea Wright added a dozen for the winners.
Alisha McNeil paced all scorers with 19 for Halifax. Eva Widmeyer scored 15.
Lake City climbed to 3-1 in the standings and drew even with idle Halifax Thunder which sits at 3-0. The Hornets slipped to 0-4.
The win marked the second time Lake City has clipped the Hornets this season, following a 67-62 win on the road back on May 5.
There is a single game on Friday when Miramichi Her-Icanes are home, facing Moncton Mystics at 7 p.m.
That game will be played at raucous Miramichi Valley High School.
The Her-Icanes are 1-4 and Moncton arrives with a 1-1 mark.
