Leading 41-40 at halftime over Halifax, the Thunder turned up the heat over the last 20 minutes, pushing its way to an 81-66 Maritime Women’s Basketball Association win Saturday.
The game was played at Harrison Trimble High School.
Alaina McMillan had 22 points to spark visiting Halifax. Sandy Saunders helped a balanced Thunder attack with 13. Karla Yepez meshed nine and Sydney Guker-Wickie and Kiera Duffie both had eight.
Leonie Elbert scored 17 first half points and finished with a game-high 23 to lead Moncton. Allie Berry had a dozen and Jenna Jones registered 10.
Halifax moved to 6-0 and temporarily took over top spot alone in the standings with 12 points. Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth are in action late Saturday and entered their game with host Port City Fog of Saint John with a 5-1 mark.
One other game has Miramichi Her-Icanes visiting Halifax Hornets.
The lone game Sunday features hometown Fredericton Freeze welcoming Lake City at 1 p.m. at Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium.
