56ers, Thunder Clash Sunday

The Lake City 56ers look to remain undefeated Sunday, as an impressive start to the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association continues.

Lake City moved to 3-0 on Saturday with a 57-45 win over Halifax Hornets. One other Saturday outing had Miramichi Her-icanes tame visiting Fredericton Freeze, 68-56.

The 56ers are 3-0 and host Halifax Thunder on Sunday at Cole Harbour High School.

Lake City used a 22 point and three assist performance from reigning Royale Player of the Week Courtney Donaldson to help subdue the Hornets. Zoe Olscamp struck for 10 points and Lillian Fuller had nine.

Amanda Piercey’s dozen lifted the Hornets. Samantha Manieri popped seven.

At Miramichi, the hosts were shot out of a cannon in the opening frame, leading 17-2 at one point.

Fredericton stayed persistent and cut the lead to two points in the fourth quarter before the Her-Icanes put things on ice, pulling away late.

Grace Lancaster lit up for 21 points to lead Miramichi. Lauren Rainford scored 13 and Devon Lawlor added a dozen.

Bailey Russell’s 18 paced Fredericton. Eva Tumwine scored 14 and Katie Daley added 10.
