‘Canes’ Sharpshooter Nabs Honour

Yes, she did miss some shots.

But you had to really look hard to catch balls that didn’t tickle mesh for Grace Lancaster last week.

The sharp-shooting Lancaster powered her Miramichi Her-Icanes to a pair of Maritime Women’s Basketball Association victories last week to push the squad into sole possession of second place with a 3-1 record.

For her efforts, Lancaster was named the Royale Player of the Week across the league.

Royale is a founding partner of the MWBA, a huge supporter since inception in 2022.

Lancaster started her bountiful week with 16 points including a quartet of three-pointers in a 100-76 win over the Fredericton Freeze. She was a plus 19. She scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and was a plus 46 in a 72-47 win over Port City Fog of Saint John.

Other players considered for the weekly Royale honour included Amelia Mitchell of the Fog, Sadie Bowen of the Moncton Mystics, Samantha Stordy of the Fredericton Freeze, MacKenzie Smith from the Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour, Halifax Thunder’s Sophie Atkinson and Meliana Collins of the Halifax Hornets.

League action resumes Wednesday on two fronts including the Battle of Halifax when Collins and the Hornets host Thunder and Atkinston at 7 p.m. at newly-furbished Mount St. Vincent University.

At 7:30 p.m., Stordy and the Freeze greet Bowie and the Mystics at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium in Fredericton.
