Matinee Action Highlights MWBA

It was  a busy Saturday afternoon in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association.

When the dust had settled, the Fredericton Freeze, Miramichi Her-Icanes and Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour all prevailed.

At Mount St. Vincent University, Fredericton assumed control late in the first quarter and would go on to tame the host Halifax Hornets, 86-58 to improve to 4-2.

Eva Tumwine continued her strong season for Fredericton, leading all scorers with 20 points. Tumwine had 14 points in the first half. Bailey Russell dropped 18 including four three-pointers. Katie Daley was right behind the leaders with 17 points. Allie McCarthy had 11.

Lily Francois sparked the Hornets with 19 points including five treys. Nevaeh O’Connell had nine and Maddy Hiscock eight.

The Hornets fell to 1-4.

At Moncton’s Crandall University, the host Mystics had a 21-16 lead after a frame, but Miramichi found its groove and would go on to a 94-50 win to earn its fourth straight victory. Miramichi is now 5-1. Moncton slipped to 0-5.

At the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth, Lake City clung to a one point lead in the second half before going on to post an 84-59 decision over Port City Fog of Saint John.

The 56ers remain atop the standings at 6-1. Fog fell to 1-3.

Action continues Sunday on three fronts.

Port City visits the Hornets at 1 p.m. at MSVU and at 2 p.m., Miramichi welcomes Moncton to Miramichi Valley High School. An hour later, Fredericton visits Cole Harbour High School to tangle with the 56ers.

Halifax Thunder is idle this weekend.
