Lake City, Miramichi Stay Hot

The Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour and Miramichi Her-Icanes stayed hot, hot, hot over the weekend.

The top two teams in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association kept rolling with two wins apiece as they try and separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

Lake City is now 7-1 for first spot. Miramichi sits 5-1, its only loss to the 56ers on the opening game of the season.

The 56ers had a massive battle Sunday with the Fredericton Freeze, pulling out a dramatic and late 75-70 win over their guest.s

Lake City actually held a 50-40 halftime lead, but Fredericton stiffened its defence in the second half and almost stole a win in enemy territory.

Thing is, the Freeze couldn’t contain the talented due of MacKenzie Smith and Courtney Donaldson.

Smith rattled home 23 points and Donaldson added 17. Donaldson actually became the MWBA’s all-time leading scorer with her Sunday performance, surpassing previous leader Karissa Kajorinne and her 400 career points. Darah Felurgin had 11.

Allie McCarthy paced all scorers with 24 points. Bailey Russell had 13 and Eva Tumwine scored 11.

Meanwhile, Miramichi bolted to a 37-17 halftime lead at home and coasted past Moncton Mystics for a weekend sweep of its Hub City rivals, posting an 88-45 victory to go to 5-1.

Lauren Rainford poured in 24 points to spark the ‘Canes. She had help with 18 from Devon Lawlor.

Celine Sterckel counted 15 for Moncton. Addie Albert dropped 13.

Moncton fell to 0-6.

Meanwhile, the Halifax Hornets posted a 71-43 triumph over visiting Port City Fog of Saint John.

Katelyn Power and veteran Jasmine Parent both had 14 points for the Hornets. Melina Collins scored 23 and Sasha Dabb 10.

Jillian Mumford had 11 for Port City. Mali Straker scored eight and Emma Roberts had seven.

Halifax moved to 2-4 and Port City fell to 1-4.

– Darah Felurgin’s strong fourth quarter helped Lake City to another win.
