The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association had a busy and eventful week.
It’s fourth week of competition was highlighted with team winning streaks, some dandy finishes and solid individual performances.
Through all of it, MacKenzie Smith of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour’s Lake City 56ers emerged as the Royale Player of the Week Award winner.
Royale is a founding partner of the MWBA, with the league since its inception in 2022.
Smith put on a pair of dominant performances for the 56ers during a pair of wins for the first place team. The former star with St. Joseph’s Hawks of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level, had her offensive touch on full display in wins over two New Brunswick teams.
She hung 26 points and grabbed five rebounds in an 84-59 win over Saint John’s Port City Fog while matching the point total and seven rebounds in a dramatic 75-70 victory over Fredericton Freeze.
Smith graduated from St. Joseph’s as its 22ns all-time leader in points with 1,129 for the Philadelphia-based school.
Other players considered for the Royale Player of the Week Award were Sadie Bowen of the Moncton Mystics, Devon Lawlor of Miramichi Her-Icanes, Allie McCarthy of the Freeze, Lily Francois of Halifax Hornets, Jillian Mumford of Port City and Kiera Duffie of Halifax Thunder.
There are two mid-week games including Thunder visiting Hornets at Mount St. Vincent University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
At the same time, Port City visits Moncton at Crandall University.
