‘Canes Earn Final Berth

There will be a new Maritime Women’s Basketball Association champion.

And whichever team wins Sunday, it will be the first time in team history to collect the hardware.

Miramichi Her-Icanes dispatched the two-time reigning champion Halifax Thunder, 77-68 Saturday night in a stirring PRO•LINE Legacy Cup second semifinal at the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton.

The ‘Canes will face regular season champion Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour in Sunday’s final.

Game time is 3 p.m.

Both teams actually finished tied atop the regular season standings with 8-2 records.

The Lakers defeated Miramichi in the first game of the season back on May 4.

It was a wide-open affair in the semifinal, but the Her-Icanes pulled away in the fourth quarter after Thunder pushed to tie in the waning minutes.

Lauren Rainford was a force for Miramichi, draining 28 points. Grinding Abby Miller had 17 and Grace Lancaster scored 11.

Sami Russell’s 15 sparked Halifax. Kiera Duffie scored nine and Bianca Helmig had eight.

Thunder will face Fredericton Freeze in the consolation final Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
