Fog Veteran off to Memorial

Amelia Mitchell watched a former teammate make the move with success.

She’s hoping to follow suit.

Mitchell, a staple with the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s Port City Fog of Saint John, will jump to Atlantic University Sport level in 2025-26, lacing up with Newfoundland’s Memorial University Seahawks for head coach, Mark English.

Mitchell capped her Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association four-year career with Sackville’s Mount Allison University Mounties. The six-foot forward was named an ACAA first-team all star last season. She averaged 13.2 points per game for Mount Allison in 2024-25.

Former Mount Allison teammate Abby Miller made the decision to play in the AUS last season when she suited up with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers for her fifth season of eligibility.

Both Mitchell and Miller play against each other in the MWBA with the latter a member of the Miramichi Her-icanes.

‘Amelia will be a fantastic addition to our team next season,’ English told MUN Athletics. ‘Amelia has improved every year in the ACAA and she had a very impressive season last year at Mount Allison. We feel she can bring rebounding and extra scoring in the paint which is something that we need. We look forward to seeing her bring her game to the AUS level.’

Mitchell will study and research in the field of Clinical Epidemiology.

‘I am beyond excited to be continuing my basketball and educational journey at Memorial,’ Mitchell told MUN. ‘Having the opportunity to study and research in the field of Clinical Epidemiology while playing basketball at another level has been a dream of mine. I am extremely thankful to have the chance to play one more year and finish out my eligibility. I cannot wait to see what the 2025-2026 season has in store.’

It’s not easy coming to a new program, but the veteran head coach said Mitchell will fit in seamlessly.

‘Amelia is also known for her excellent leadership, is a great academic,’ said English. ‘We are always trying to add athletes who strive for excellence in all areas. This is something that Amelia certainly does. We feel she will be a great fit with our culture and she will help us as we continue to grow and build our team for next season.’

Mitchell will have a familiar face in the Seahawks’ lineup.

Eavan McLaughlin enters her fourth season at Memorial. McLaughlin, a Fredericton native, played last season in the MWBA with the Moncton Mystics.

Mitchell is the all-time leader in games played for the Fog with 37. Her 192 career points has her fifth overall for Port City.
