The first week of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association is in the books.
That means the first Wonder Auto&Tire Player of the Week award has been announced.
Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi helped spark Halifax Thunder to a pair of wins as she returned to the MWBA after a one-year absence.
Beals-Iseyemi scored 21 points in a win over Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston and offered 17 in a victory against Truro Tidal Queens.
With the 38 weekend points, she moved into 12th place all-time on the MWBA scoring race with 276 in 21 games.
Beals-Iseyemi has spent the past two seasons playing professionally for USC Heidelberg in the German 2.Bundsliga.
Other players nominated for the award were Ella MacDonald of Saint John’s Port City Fog, Aki Kobayashi of Halifax Hornets, Ainsley Green of Miramichi HerIcanes, Ann Bastien of Fredericton Freeze, Eve Kalala of Moncton Mystics, Evie Hargraves of Lake City and Truro’s Isa MacKay.
Week II of the league’s fifth season begins Friday when Port City (1-0) hosts Moncton (0-2).
That game is set for University of New Brunswick at Saint John at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Lake City (1-1) welcomes Truro (0-1) to Cole Harbour High School at 3 p.m. while at 5 p.m., Thunder (2-0) hosts Hornets (1-0) at Halifax Grammar School
Port City travels to face the HerIcanes in a 6 p.m., clash at Miramichi Valley High School.
There are a pair of home openers Sunday.
Truro hosts the Hornets at noon at Dal Agricultural College.
The Freeze opens its home season welcoming the ‘Canes at 1 p.m., at Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium and at 3 p.m., back at Halifax Grammar School, it’s the Thunder and Lake City.
