MWBA News&Notes For You

As the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association prepares for its third week of action, it will have a tough act to follow.

‘Our second week showcased everything that makes the MWBA such a competitive and exciting league,’ said league commissioner Jen Lloyd of Dartmouth, NS. ‘The intensity picked up across the board as teams continued to settle into the season. Rivalries began to heat up and several clubs delivered statement performances. The level of basketball proved the MWBA continues to raise the standard every week.’

Lloyd said the speed of the games have been a highlight.

‘The pace of play remained outstanding and the energy in gyms around the league was impossible to ignore,’ she said. ‘Teams are beginning to find their rhythm and fans are already being treated to some fantastic basketball.’

Here are some News&Notes from across the circuit.

*The Fredericton Freeze found its offence and poured in points with a 90-62 win over Miramichi HerIcanes. It was the highest point production of the week. Moncton Mystics, Port City Fog of Saint John and Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston continued their high-octane offences, both hanging 87 points on opponents.

*On the other side of the court, Halifax Hornets yielded only 43 points in a road win over Truro Tidal Queens. Halifax Thunder’s defence limited Lake City to 57 points and Fog allowed 60 against in a tilt against Miramichi.

*Thunder is the league’s only undefeated team, checking in at 4-0. Halifax has a bye in the schedule and is idle this week.

*That doesn’t mean the rest of the league goes quiet. Week III opens Thursday in Moncton when the Mystics host their home opener, a 7 p.m., clash with Port City. It sets the stage for three games on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John for his week’s PRO•LINE Featured Game of the Week when the Freeze visits Port City. At 3 p.m., Miramichi finds in Halifax to take on the Hornets at 3 p.m. at Mount St. Vincent University. The 5 p.m., game is in Truro at Dal Agricultural College when the host Tidal Queens welcome Lake City.

*Three more games are set for Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m., with the Hornets greeting Truro at MSVU. A pair of 3 p.m., games have Fredericton facing Moncton at Crandall University and the HerIcanes playing Lake City at Cole Harbour High School.

* Some interesting developments with Moncton and its youthful team making noise early in the MWBA season. With the youth comes veteran leadership, too. Great to see veteran Lindsay Black averaging 22:55 per game of floor time and also the return of Kelsey McLaughlin and Jenna Jones, two league staples who took last season off. Jones averages just under 18 minutes and McLaughlin is checking in at just over 15 minutes.

*Speaking of comebacks, Thunder’s Justine Colley-Leger is making plenty of noise. The multi-talented Colley-Leger is top five in a number of categories for the Halifax squad. We will showcase the MWBA’s leader board on Thursday.
