Visiting Fredericton Freeze set a franchise record for points in a game, powered by veteran Eva Tumwine, en route to a 113-63 victory over the Truro Tidal Queens on Sunday in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association Sunday in the Nova Scotia hub.
Fredericton finished its regular season with a 6-4 record and will place second in the New Brunswick Division.
That means the Freeze will host the Port City Fog of Saint John in a sudden-death semifinal Sunday, June 14. The game is tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium in Fredericton.
The winner of that game advances to the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup, set for the Richard J. Currie Center in Fredericton June 20 to 21.
The other New Brunswick semifinal will feature Moncton Mystics hosting Miramichi HerIcanes.
A weekend date will be announced soon.
Fredericton set a franchise record for points scored last Thursday with 105 in a win over Moncton, but passed that Sunday behind a 25-point outburst from Tumwine.
Kristen Taylor launched 23 points for the Freeze and Bailey Russell added 22. Allie McCarthy had 17 in the win. Paige LeBlanc added 15 and Nicole Campbell recorded a personal high 10 points.
A veteran trio paced Truro’s offence with Courtney Cain-Nordin scoring 18. Nalini Maharaj and Kendra MacKinnon both scored 17 for the expansion squad.
Truro will face Nova Scotia Division regular season champion Halifax Thunder next weekend.
The other Nova Scotia semifinal pits Halifax Hornets hosting Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston.
Dates, times and venues will be announced this week.
