The Fredericton Freeze knocked down the most points they’ve scored this season.

Didn’t matter to Halifax Thunder.

Thunder dropped 11 treys along the way, withstood a fourth quarter Fredericton rally and went on to post an 88-79 win in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association play Saturday.

It was the opening game of six to be played this weekend at Harrison Trimble High School, hosted by the Moncton Mystics.

Halifax, sitting atop the standings at 8-0, showed exactly why in the first half, threatening to run away from the Freeze before things tightened up.

The Thunder used a balanced offence with everyone in the lineup scoring at least three points.

Haley McDonald paced Halifax’s scoreboard outburst with a game-high 18 points. Katherine Quackenbush hit a season-high 17 and Vanessa Pickard and Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi both had 10. Grace Wade returned to Moncton and popped nine points, the same output as Laura Langille.

Thunder held a 51-38 lead at the half.

Fredericton was paced by 17 points from Eva Tumwine and Nicole Esson had 15. Robbi Daley had 11 and Megan Arseneault clicked for 10.
