Next step, playoffs.

After a remarkable 27-month build up and the first-ever Maritime Women’s Basketball Association regular season behind us, it’s time to pursue the Legacy Cup.

It all gets under way Friday at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax with all six teams landing in the Nova Scotia capital.

Quarter-final Friday opens at 6 p.m. with Nova Scotia No. 2 seed Halifax Hornets facing New Brunswick No. 3 seed Moncton Mystics.

The Hornets posted an 8-2 record this season, their only losses to regular season champion Halifax Thunder which joins Fredericton Freeze in earning byes into the semifinals as top provincial seeds. The Mystics finished 2-8, but did win two of their last four games and have played teams tough all season long.

The other 8 p.m. quarter-final puts No. 2 NB seed Port City Fog of Saint John against NS No. 3 seed Windsor Edge.

Fog finished 2-8 and Windsor came in at 4-6.

The losing teams will meet in a June 26 consolation game at 3 p.m. as a scene-setter for semifinal play.

Thunder will face the lowest remaining seed in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. while Fredericton draws the highest remaining seed at 7 p.m.

Third place game is June 26 at 1 p.m. followed by the battle for the Legacy Cup at 3 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the door.
