The first player of the week award in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association will be a focal point for defences this weekend when the league gathers in Fredericton for a six-game showcase.

Kaylee Kilpatrick of Saint John’s Port City Fog is the first player of the week award winner.

Deservedly so.

The former standout with the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, who later went on to play professionally in three countries, was a key player in the Fog’s solid start, the Port City brigade putting together a 2-1 record for a busy opening week.

Kilpatrick logged over 100 minutes in three games for the Fog and was a force inside at both ends of the court, taking on the opposition bigs. She had 22 points in a 98-95 thrilling overtime win over Moncton and in two games during a split with Fredericton, she had 25 points and was involved in several key turning points, particularly in a season opening win at home.

The Saint John product suited up at the pro level in Ireland, Australia and Germany.

Other nominees were Katie Butts of the Fredericton Freeze, Jasmine Parent of the Halifax Hornets, Tiffany Reynolds of the Halifax Thunder, Windsor Edge’s Emily MacNeil and Leo Elbert of the Moncton Mystics.

A three-person committee selects the player of the week honours for the MWBA.
