What an opening and wide-open couple of weeks the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association has enjoyed.

Right out of the gate, it is clear that parity has jumped into the six-team MWBA and that’s always a positive side when it comes to competition.

As the league prepares to enter a light schedule this week leading into the Victoria Day Weekend bye, Leonie Elbert of the Moncton Mystics is the leading pointgetter.

The German point guard, who played for Mainz in her home nation’s Germany-2.Bundesliga, is averaging 23.6 points per game after three outings for the Mystics.

Last year’s MWBA scoring champion Karissa Kajorinne is second with 17.3 points per game. Kajorinne is with the Halifax Thunder after spending last season with the Windsor Edge. She played for Olivais as a pro in Portugal this past season.

Vanessa Pickard has one game played and is third at 17.0 points per game while the reigning MWBA player of the week, Kaylee Kilpatrick of Saint John’s Port City Fog is at 16.8 points per outing. Kilpatrick played professionally in Ireland, Australia and Germany.

Katie Butts of Fredericton Freeze is fifth at 16.5 followed by former German pro Allie Berry of Moncton (16.0) and Jasmine Parent (16.0) of the Halifax Hornets. Another former German pro, Hannah Brown, of the Hornets is at 15.2 points a game.

Katie McAffee of the Freeze (13.6) and Tiffany Reynolds of the Thunder round out the top 10 with 13.6 points a game.

League action continues Thursday with two games.

The undefeated Halifax Thunder (3-0) host Windsor Edge (0-3) at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax while the Mystics (2-1) welcome Port City (3-2) to Harrison Trimble High School.

Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
