A tale of two games, a story of two wins.

That’s how Saturday unfolded in the Maritime Women’s Basketball League.

Fredericton Freeze had to fight tooth and nail to earn its seven victory of the season while the Halifax Hornets won their second straight to end the season on a victory note.

Fredericton shaded Moncton Mystics, 87-86 in a rough and tumble, back and forth affair in the New Brunswick capital. In Windsor, the Hornets downed the Edge, 92-65.

At Fredericton, the Freeze exploded out of the gate, but tenacious Moncton held tough and trailed 26-19 after one. It was 43-34 at the half for the hosts as Kylee Speedy drilled seven three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, six of them in the first quarter.

Moncton actually battled back and took the lead, outscoring the Freeze 29-21 in the third quarter, but the host chipped away, up by five late before the Mystics made a late push to make it a tense ending.

Speedy finished with 29 points and eight treys.

Allie McCarthy sunk 18, Katie Daley and Katie Butts both hit for 13. Jennifer Nkuah had nune.

Lia St. Pierre paced Moncton with 19 and Allie Berry scored 18. Jenna Jones had three triples and finished with 15 and Leonie Elbert scored 11.

In Windsor, the Hornets used a balanced attack to take the Edge and finish the season, 4-6.

Katherine Khorovets knocked down 17 for Halifax. Courtney Donaldson hit for 15, Leah Martin had 11 and Hannah Brown and Sarah Gordon both scored nine.

Nalini Maharah drilled 19 for Windsor which fell to 0-10.

Emily MacNeil scored 14 and Isa MacKay had 10.

The lone game Sunday is in Moncton with the Mystics welcoming Port City Fog of Saint John to Harrison Trimble High School.

Game time is 4 p.m.
