Halifax Thunder bent, but didn’t break.

Experience in droves and a balanced offensive attack allowed Halifax to finish with an 83-74 Maritime Women’s Basketball Association triumph over Miramichi Her-Icanes on Sunday at Saint Mary’s University in the Nova Scotia capital.

Thunder improved to 3-0 on the regular season and has sole possession of first place, two points ahead of idle Fredericton Freeze and Lake City 56ers.

Miramichi slipped to 1-3 in its first season of play in the MWBA.

Halifax carried a 45-29 lead into the intermission, but the Her-Icanes came out flying in the third quarter, outscoring their hosts, 29-13 to make a game of it, the visitors threatening to pull off the upset.

Thunder, however, scored 24 points of its own in the pivotal fourth frame to put the game on ice, backed by 19 points from Justine Colley-Leger and 18 from Alaina McMillan. Katie Ross and Grace Lancaster both had nine points for the winners. Sami Russell added eight.

Lauren Rainford continued her impressive play for Miramichi, outscoring everyone with 28 points. Devon Lawlor sunk eight and Abby Miller counted seven.
