The Truro Tidal Queens have been busy signing players in anticipation of their first Maritime Women’s Basketball Association season.

Expansion Truro has pushed the MWBA to eight teams when the league’s fifth season opens in early May.

Truro’s first signing, the first player to commit across the league, came earlier in January when former Saint Mary’s University Huskies’ sharpshooter Kendra MacKinnon joined the Tidal Queens.

MacKinnon will be joined by five other recent signees including Courtney Cain-Nordin, Tyler Malloy, Menna McCabe, Lucia MacKay and Kaley Axworthy.

Cain-Nordin is no stranger to the MWBA. She has appeared in 20 career games, scoring 74 points with the Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston. Cain-Nordin spent three seasons with Saint Mary’s and also played with Charlottetown’s Holland College Hurricanes of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.

Malloy also played with the 56ers, amassing 16 games over two seasons. She is a former ACAA player with the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics.

McCabe is with the Mystics this season. The second year forward is from Charlottetown.

MacKay is a former rookie of the year for St. Francis Xavier University X-Women in Atlantic University Sport play. MacKay earned the award in the 2018-19 season for the Antigonish, NS, school.

Axworthy is an ACAA rookie with Moncton’s Crandall University Chargers. The Sydney, NS, native is averaging six points a game with the Chargers.

Head coach Lonnie States has added to his coaching staff as well as Truro continues to build.

States will be joined by Mikayla Bianchi, Ian David and Richard Hamilton on the Tidal Queens’ bench.
